Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso or "Refosco with the red stems" is a red grape variety that got its peculiar name thanks to the red color of the stems. The dark-skinned grape varieties, native from Friuli Venezia Giulia, western Slovenia and the Istrian Peninsula of Croatia, belong to the large ancient family of the Refoscos. The wine are full-bodied, has a slightly herbaceous nose, impressive fruit intensity, laced with minerality and high levels of tart acidity. The special name of wines from Refosco — Terrano in Italy, Teran in Slovenian Karst region and Croatian Istria.
The wines have a powerful and tannic taste, with a deep violet color and a slight bitterness. On the palate, there are strong currant, blackberry and plum flavors. For the best quality this wine must be aged for four to ten years, thanks to aging it achieves a perfect floral quality.
